Dolomites of Bolzano: winter hiking and sledding
The high plateaus above Bolzano are one of the easiest places in the Alps to walk in deep winter. Wide, groomed tracks cross open snowfields with the Dolomite peaks standing in the distance, so you get the scenery of a serious mountain day without needing any technical snow skill.
The walk ends the way South Tyroleans have always ended it: on a wooden toboggan, taking the run back down to the valley. Winter gear is provided, and the guide sets the pace to the group, which makes this a good first taste of the mountains in winter rather than a test of one.
